Hi Everybody,
Christianne Beffel, our fabulous dance instructor this summer for the
PROFESSIONAL TRAINING WORKSHOP (She is also assistant choreographer and dance
captain for Joseph, assistant costuming Joseph and R and J, teaching stage makeup,
choreographing the dance in R and J and more ...!) asked me to forward this
to you. As you know, all participants in the Pro Training Workshop will take
dance in the afternoon for part of the three weeks.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
------
Hello everyone!
I'm Christianne Beffel, and I'm the dance instructor for FPAC. A question
has been brought to my attention that I think everyone should know the answer
to --
"Do we need special shoes like ballet shoes for dance?"
The answer is slightly complicated...
There is no way that I'm going to require everybody to buy all of the
necessary shoes for the various styles of dance that I will be teaching this summer
because that can get pretty pricey. However, the proper shoes make it easier
to move, so I recommend that you invest. I say "invest" because that's what
it is -- an investment. You will have these shoes for any future shows that
require you to have them, and that is more important than having them only
for a 3 week workshop in the summer. Buying them now is also a benefit because
you will learn how to dance in them, which will make it easier to do so when
you are required to for a show. This workshop is all about preparing you
for shows, so this all makes sense.
If you decide you don't want to buy shoes, that's fine. Here is what I will
ask you to do instead: Socks for ballet barre, sneakers for hip hop, and
bare feet for everything else. Socks are extremely dangerous due to
slipperiness and therefore are only a good idea when you are holding onto a barre.
This is only if you own absolutely NO dance shoes, if you already own some and
don't want to buy more than just use those.
If you do decide to buy shoes, let me help you out! Here is a list of the
shoes that are best for each style of dance you'll be learning this summer.
You can purchace what you think you'll use most or just fill to in your already
existing collection of shoes:
Ballet - ballet shoes (pink - ladies; black or white - gentlemen; canvas
split soles are what I use because they're really nice and they happen to be
cheapest)
*Jazz - jazz shoes (black or tan; split sole is easiest to move in and make
your feet look best) These are the most generic shoes and can work for any of
the styles we'll be learning and are also most frequently used in shows*
Hip Hop - hip hop shoes OR sneakers (sneakers work FINE! Unless you are
extremely moved to, don't buy actual hip hop shoes because they are really
expensive and are the least used in shows)
Musical Theatre - character shoes (ladies ONLY- black or tan; 1" heels are
best because it's a challenge dancing in stilettos!) or jazz shoes (ladies and
gentlemen)
Modern- bare feet (yay!)
To make things easy on yourselves, I recommend you buy your shoes at
_Discount Dance Supply_ (http://www.discountdance.com/index.php) because in the 17
years I've been needing to buy dance shoes, this is the CHEAPEST place I've
been able to find them, and they're convenient because you don't have to leave
your house! It's also easy to order because for each type of shoe (and they
have a HUGE selection!) they give a recommended sizing chart based on street
shoe sizes.
I hope this novel of an email has answered this seemingly simple question
and has given a wide variety of acceptable foot attire for class and future
shows, and if you haven't figured this out yet PLEASE SHOW THIS EMAIL TO YOUR
PARENTS, as it is very useful information for them to know as well!
See you this summer! :)
-Christianne
